On March 28th Hans Lo from NetherRealm Studios announced that Mortal Kombat will be getting two new characters soon after Mortal Kombats release. The two announced DLC characters are Kenshi, and Scarlet.
Kenshi I don’t mind being DLC for Mortal Kombat, sure I really like him, and definitely don’t wanna buy him, but it makes some sense to not include him in Mortal Kombat given the retro characters/story. You might recall that Kenshi came onto the scene in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance (the first Mortal Kombat for the Ps2/Xbox/Gamecube) he’s sorta one of the very few new characters MK fans actually like, so he’s a good fit for DLC seeing as he doesn’t fit with the gameconcept, and he’s fairly popular.
Scarlet being DLC on the other hand pisses me off. Scarlet was a glitch in the old MK games where the female ninja palette would be red, many people thought this was a secret character, but it was just a glitch. It’s similar to the character Ermac who was a glitch character (His name “Ermac” came from the computer not knowing what to call the glitch, and showing a shortened version of “Error Macro”=”Ermac” Ermac was later made into a full character, and everyone’s been expecting the MK team to do the same for Scarlet at some point or another. It’s just a shame that her first game debut will be as DLC when she could have been a super awesome secret character, that would bring back the nostalgia of the previous MK games, where you’d get a (stupid) rush from seeing different coloured male/female ninjas and being like “Who the fuck is that!” when Reptile jumps out on the screen, and gives eerie hints on how to fight him, or seeing Jade/Noob Saibot spying on you in the forest stage.
It’s just a plain shame to see a character with so much nostalgic potential who fits perfectly with the games retro focus/story to be nickel and dimed like this. Lets just hope she at least has a story, would of loved to see her retconned into the story like many other secret/glitch characters have been.
Pro-tip for game devs: Don’t tell us you’re already thinking of ways to charge us more money 3 weeks before your game comes out, doesn’t look too classy.
