We all know Call Of Duty is a sales juggernaut of a franchise, and I’m sure most of us expected Modern Warfare 3 to sell to everyone, and their cocaine-fuled grandmother, well tell that twitchy old bitch she’s got a lot of competition online, as Modern Warfare 3 has already sold 6.5 million copies in its first day.
To put things into perspective, Call Of Duty Black Ops (MW2) sold 5.6 million in the first day, so this is quite an impressive jump from last year for the annual shooter franchise.
And of course when you’re selling 6.5 million copies for $60 a pop you start to ‘challenge’ other entertainment industries. The biggest opening weekend for a movie was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which made $483 million in it’s first 2 days, yet Modern Warfare 3 managed to rake in $400 million in it’s first day; you can fill in the blank there.
Say what you will about Call Of Duty, but the series does have some real worth: the games are solid, they unite casual and hardcore gamers with their mass appeal/sales, and they’re rocketing our violence loving industry to the center of the entertainment universe.
