There are many different levels of human portrayal within video games. There’s a Nintendo game (Zelda, Mario, Kirby) where all you’ll have is a couple recordings of a guy grunting or making certain noises, then there’s games with full recorded dialog (which in some but not all cases the cast are recorded together for better cohesion, and flow) then you’ll have the increasingly important full body motion capture to translate real life movements into the game (Assassins Creed) but if you’re dealing with a game where there’s emphasis on the full cast, rather than just the main character, a developer will have the cast fully act, and record their dialog together, with animators doing as they please with the characters facial movements (Uncharted)
Beyond: Two Souls by Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream ups the ante a bit by not only having actors physical performance, and dialog recorded in a group acting environment as described above, but they’re also recording their actors facial expressions as well to translate the full performance into the game.
What that means is more realistic life-like, and believable actions from the characters in Beyond: Two Souls, and eventually video games as a whole when this technology becomes commonplace in AAA blockbusters.
