Diablo 3 may have been lauded by the press, and gaming industry at large, but the overall opinion among fans is that it sucks, especially compared to the wonderfully addictive classic Diablo 2.
Diablo or even Blizzard fans who’ve been paying close attention will know that Diablo 3 was developed by a different team than Diablo 1, and 2 (as you can imagine trolls, and Diablo devotees alike have likened Diablo 3′s poor quality to the difference in developers)
So when David Brevik (Co-Founder of Blizzard North, the original Diablo team) gave an interview where he was a hair less than respectful towards the new developers, the new team vented in a favorite fashion among 13 year old girls: Facebook bitching.
Here’s David Brevik on Diablo 3:
“I have very mixed emotions about it (laughs). On one hand I am sad that people haven’t enjoyed Diablo because it’s a love, a passion, and its obvious people still have a giant love and passion for Diablo and they are speaking out about it because they have such love for it. That makes me feel great.
I am sad because people are outraged and, you know, some of the decision they have made are not the decisions I would make and there have been changes in philosophy and that hasn’t gone over very well. I think in that way I am a little sad.
I am also a little happy, which I hate to say, it shows that the people that were involved in Diablo really did matter, and so I am happy that it has come to light that how talented that group was and how unique and special that group was. I am hoping that, as this happens very often in the industry, you see it with Call of Duty and things like that , when the people leave the game changes and it shows how critical people are in this industry.”
His opinion is honest, insightful, and very human overall. Now you can probably imagine the new team not caring for these comments (or the millions of fan complaints about Diablo 3 spread across the globe for the matter) but the way they reacted, especially Diablo 3′s lead designer Jay Wilson, is certainly something to see:
I can’t bring myself to directly criticize Jay Wilson, and the rest of the new Diablo crew over bitching David out, after all I imagine anyone would make similar jokes in that situation (ie: He thinks we suck? look at the shit he put out lolol) but that’s the sort of dialogue you have while knocking back a couple brews with your buds, not on a public website where your opinions as industry leaders are eyed like a rotting carcass within a buzzard flocked desert.
Protip: Either put out a good game (Diablo 2), put out a bad game no one cares about (wtf is Hellgate: London?), or keep your snide comments strictly amongst your peers, to avoid making your bad game look worse (Diablo 3)
